Geosimulation

How do environmental systems work, and what will happen under different management decisions?
Geosimulation is spatial computer modelling of landscapes, people and environmental systems. We apply Geosimulation techniques to natural resources management, to assess the results of management responses, to test 'what if' scenarios, and demonstrate pathways to achieve management objectives.
Geosimulation Applications:

Hydrology
- Simulate basin-scale water balance, river flow, flood frequency, extent and damage hazard. Test the effects of land use change, water storage, alternative water use, and meteorology.

Land use change
- Simulate the evolution of landscapes, representing the push and pull of development disturbance types with vegetation recovery and succession.

Regional and urban planning
- Simulate the growth and change of urban and regional systems. Model regional development with whole-of-system indicators for economic, social and environmental conditions. Represent spatial development for different economic sectors, including urban, agriculture, forestry, industrial, tourism.

Fire management
- Simulate fire spread and test fire management practices. Educate stakeholders on fire spread dynamics based on meteorology, fuel loads and fire management.

Recreation planning
- Test design of parks and protected areas, trail and road planning for multi-use landscapes, route finding and 3D viewscape modelling.

Wildlife management
- Wildlife models respond to disturbance, vegetation dynamics and hydrological variation. Use models to assess the potential impacts of development on target and sensitive species.

Custom-designed geosimulation models can represent your vision, we work with you to build it.
3D Solutions
Digital and physical 3D models
3D flyovers
Effectively communicate landscapes at large and small scales. Demonstrate your vision in a 3D digital world.
3D-printed landscapes
3D prints use digital elevation models adjusted to accentuate physical features such as water bodies, terrain features, structures and landscape alterations. 3D prints keep communicating long after the presentation is over.

Projection-Augmented Landscapes (PALs)
The combination of 3D-printed landscapes and GIS data projection. PALs are visually-stunning physical elevation surfaces for presenting spatial information. If a picture tells a thousand words, a PAL tells a thousand stories.

Custom-designed 3D landscapes for printing or visualization are available upon request.

Mediated Modelling
Participatory models can be conducted with stakeholders using a Projection-Augmented Landscape (PAL), or an online interface in the computer lab, classroom, or in the field.

Serious gaming in a digital sandbox.
Geosimulation models become participatory games where stakeholders take control of the model through physical interaction with the Projection-Augmented Landscape (PAL). Participants run scenarios, test strategies, debate approaches through play, and thereby form common understanding of how the system operates and will respond to interventions.

Environmental Monitoring
Collect, manage and report on environmental conditions
Environmental and Cultural Impact Assessment
Sophisticated tools for assessing and displaying the impact of land management activities and the outcomes for environmental and cultural assets.

Information Management Systems
Technology for collection, management and reporting of spatial, audio, video, and document-based information. Generation of GIS data with easy-to-use interface functions. Analysis of data for the use in research and natural resource management assessment.

Field-based Data Collection
Tools, methods and skills for recording environmental data directly from the field.
